Factory Workers Get Unexpected Day Off

"DETROIT, MI — An employee at a Chrysler Group LLC automotive plant died Thursday morning after an altercation in the facility, and the auto worker suspected of stabbing his colleague to death was found dead at a nearby park, police said.

"The suspect was found by authorities midmorning Thursday on Belle Isle, the city's 982-acre island park in the Detroit River not far from Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

"Earlier in the day, two employees at the auto maker's Jefferson North plant were involved in some kind of fight inside the plant, the auto maker said. One employee was stabbed and died at the plant. A spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department said the two men had a history of not getting along.

"As a result of the death at the plant, the auto maker suspended production and released its employees. The plant on the city's east side has 3,075 hourly and salaried workers on two shifts.

"Chrysler's Jefferson North plant was built in 1991 and now makes two sport-utility vehicles: the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango."
