Woman Survives Botched Murder/Suicide

"LIBERTY TWP, OH — A man fatally shot himself at his home early today after shooting his girlfriend during a domestic dispute.

"Deputies were called to the home of James A. Crego, 42, at 4397 Seldom Seen Road in Liberty Township about 1:35 a.m., Delaware County Sheriff Russ Martin said.

"Crego and his girlfriend were arguing when he shot her in the back outside the house as she ran away, Martin said. She ran to a neighboring house to seek help and call authorities.

"Deputies and sheriff’s office SWAT members surrounded the house and attempted to contact Crego but received no response, Martin said.

"Crego’s body was spotted outside the house several hours later as dawn approached. Deputies had been unable to see his body due to the darkness, Martin said. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff said.

"His girlfriend, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."
