Dad Slits Throat In Motel Room After Killing Wife, Son

"WESTON, FL — A Weston father killed his wife and teenage son in their townhouse and then drove to Tallahassee in an attempt to kill his other son earlier this week, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

"Investigators said the man, Pedro José Maldonado Sr., 53, eventually slit his own throat in a north Florida motel room bathroom.

"Detectives said they believe Maldonado shot Monica Narvaez-Maldonado, 47, and Pedro José Maldonado Jr., 17, sometime Monday with a hand-held crossbow that shoots small arrows.

"He then headed to Tallahassee where his older son, José Maldonado, 21, attends Florida State University. Investigators said Maldonado rented a hotel room Monday, and just after 7 a.m. Tuesday, attacked his son.

"Detetives said Pedro José Maldonado tried to shoot his son with the crossbow, but José turned, and the arrow hit his ear.

"His father began to choke him, but his son struggled and managed to get away from his dad, who fled the scene. José did not report the attack, according to authorities.

"Around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Pedro Jose Maldonado. Sr. called a friend in Miami and admitted to killing his wife and son, according to BSO.

"The friend immediately notified authorities, not knowing Pedro Maldonado Sr.'s, location.

"Members of BSO’s SWAT team went to the family's Weston townhouse on Vineyard Circle, where they found the bodies of Monica Narvaez-Maldonado and Pedro José Maldonado Jr.

"Detectives later learned that Pedro Maldonado Sr. may have been in Columbia County. Homicide detectives asked the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Lake City Police Department to search for the suspect's black Volvo SUV at area hotels.

"The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team later located the Volvo at the Cabot Lodge in Lake City. A SWAT negotiator tried for hours to contact Maldonado with no success. Just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, they entered the room and found him dead."
