Gun Jam Foils Suicide Bid

"CARSON CITY, NV — An 88-year-old Nevada man shot his wife in the chest while she was being treated at a hospital in a failed murder-suicide Sunday, police said.

"Cops booked William Dresser on suspicion of attempted murder after his wife suffered life-threatening injuries after being shot once in the chest in her hospital room Sunday in Carson City.

"Dresser told cops he tried to kill his wife because she was paralyzed and wanted to die. The husband told investigators he brought two bullets for each of them, but the gun jammed after he shot his wife once.

"After the shooting, Dresser `was crying and mumbled words to the effect of, 'I did not accomplish my goal,'` investigators wrote in a probable cause report.

"Police did not release the victim's identity or why she was in the hospital, but her initial illness was not due to foul play.

"The incident occurred in a room on the third floor of the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center at 11:30 a.m., when Dresser entered with a small-caliber, semiautomatic handgun he just purchased, and shot her once in the chest, police said. She was transferred to a hospital in Reno for treatment of her critical injuries.

"The hospital released a statement saying it was under lockdown for about two hours as authorities investigated and determined it was a `targeted incident.`

"Hospital staff quickly apprehended Dresser and held him for the authorities."
