Cancer Struggle Ends With Murder/Suicide

"OREGON CITY, OR — Police said an Oregon City couple died in a murder-suicide Tuesday after a long, draining struggle with terminal cancer.

"Lt. Jim Band, Oregon City police spokesman, said an investigation indicates James Michael `Mike` Hamel, 56, shot his wife, Rhonda L. Hamel, 66, then himself.

"Band said Rhonda Hamel had exhausted all conventional treatments for cancer, then turned to `extreme lengths` in hopes of finding a cure. Ultimately, however, she was losing the fight.

"`It's a real tragedy,` Band said. `They were married for about 30 years.`

"Band said police received a call at 1:46 a.m. Tuesday from a relative of the Hamels who said Mike Hamel had telephoned to say his wife was `gone` and that he `couldn't take it anymore and couldn't live without her.`

"`They said we could find the key in the front door,` Band said.

"When police went to the home on 18894 Atlanta Drive, they found both of their bodies."

  1. I think it is not a good idea. When you are diagnosed with cancer, you have to believe that you will be healed and not to take your life. They should have tried an alternative cancer treatments perhaps.
