Four Dead In Ohio

"HOCKING COUNTY, OH — Police are trying to determine why a man shot and killed three family members before turning the gun on himself Monday afternoon.

"What apparently started as a domestic dispute escalated into a triple-murder/suicide. The shooter did allow one man, his stepson, to leave because he had a family, Hocking County Sheriff Lanny North said.

"The shooter, who has not been identified, also spared his wife.

"`I haven't worked on something like this in this area for a long time, some time in the early 1980s,` North said. `It's been a long, hard night.`

"North did not release the names of the four individuals.

"Police were notified at 5:04 p.m., when the shooter's stepson called 911 after witnessing the three murders, then being told to leave. Another man and two women were killed in the shooter1s house, at 8187 Ohio 664N.

"`What we had here tonight is an apparent murder/suicide,` North said. `We arrived on scene after the first call, and we entered the house at about 8:45. We had a chaplain present to try to counsel the shooter, but we never spoke to him.

"`The witness and one woman inside the house are the only survivors. The witness apparently was saved because he has a family.`

"North said that the female survivor inside the house was the wife of the shooter. She was being treated at a local hospital.

"North said the shooter was convicted of murder in Athens County in 1974 and served a 10-year prison sentence."
