"Lingering Suspicions" Confirmed

"WILMINGTON, NC — Eduard Nagel shot his stepdaughter four times before turning the gun on himself Monday, authorities say.

"Detectives investigating the deaths of Nagel and his stepdaughter, Valerie Kelly, have officially labeled the crime a murder-suicide, authorities said on Thursday. The conclusion confirms lingering suspicions that arose after their bodies were found in a house on Normandy Drive in New Hanover County.

"Sgt. Jerry Brewer, a spokesman for the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, said in a statement to media organizations that the investigation determined that Nagel, 85, shot Kelly, 53, with a .38-caliber handgun and then killed himself.

"The killing occurred Monday inside a house at 310 Normandy Drive, a quiet neighborhood near Carolina Beach and College roads. Nagel's wife, Eris Hurd Nagel, reportedly witnessed the shooting and called 911 after a neighbor found her distraught and walking not far from her home with blood on her arm. She told dispatch operators that her husband `went crazy,` taking out a gun and opening fire in a back bedroom.

"The sheriff's office did not immediately say anything about a possible motive."
