Father And Son Pronounced Dead At Home

"PLEASANT GROVE, AL — Authorities believe the deaths of a father and son found fatally shot in Pleasant Grove were a murder/suicide, police said Tuesday.

"Don K. Herring, 82, and his son, 58-year-old David Phillip Herring, were found Sunday morning at Don Herring's home. Both are longtime Pleasant Grove residents.

"A relative found their bodies at Don Herring's home at 535 5th Court about 10:53 a.m. They were pronounced dead at 10:57 a.m.

"Authorities initially were investigating the deaths as a possible double suicide. However, Pleasant Grove police Sgt. Danny Reid said Tuesday that autopsy results indicate Don Herring shot his son and then shot himself.

"Don Herring had been making suicidal comments for months, and in recent weeks had talked about `taking his son with him` police said. The trajectory of the bullets and statements from family members indicate murder/suicide, Reid said."
