Texas Identity Thieves Found Dead In Florida Keys

"BIG PINE KEY, FL — Detectives say they've confirmed the identities of two people found dead in a car on Big Pine Key Monday, and that it was a murder/suicide.

"The bodies of Jim Ovecka, 49, and Michelle Chapman, 54, were discovered by an employee of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District at 8:15 a.m. Monday inside a 2004 Honda Element parked in a wooded area past the end of 5th Avenue.

"The car was running and a hose was taped to the tailpipe and run into a back window of the car.

"Deputy Becky Herrin from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said it wasn't the auto's exhaust that killed them—Ovecka used a handgun to first shoot Chapman in the head, then shoot himself.

"Ovecka and Chapman were identified from Arizona drivers licenses found in the car and by fingerprints that were compared to a set of fingerprints from Corpus Christi, Texas.

"The couple had owned a restaurant in Corpus Christi, Herrin said, were arrested for stealing money through customers' credit cards. She said the two were given 10 years probation for stealing $200,000 and were required by the courts to pay back most of it."
