Police "Making No Assumptions"
"New London, CT - A man and a woman who lived together at the Garfield Avenue Apartments died of gunshot wounds this morning in an apparent murder-suicide.
"City police responded at about 9:40 to a report of a domestic disturbance at 151 Garfield Ave. Shortly thereafter, the victims were removed from the building and taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. From there, the bodies of Jessinia Calderon and Jose Velez were transferred to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington, where a spokesman said autopsies would be performed Saturday.
"At the shooting scene, police Capt. William Dittman, said no suspects were being sought, adding, `We are making no assumptions.`
"Laurie Mirlas, 44, who lives in the apartment next to the one where the shooting occurred, called police at 9:35 to report that loud quarreling next door had escalated into physical violence. Five minutes later, Mirlas, who lives with her son, Robert Rouleau, 26, heard a shot or shots fired, and a bullet came through the wall separating her apartment from the one in which Calderon and Velez lived.
"As many as three shots may have been fired, Rouleau said.
"`Dry wall was flying everywhere,` he said."
