Tree Survives Murder/Suicide

"KOLKATA, INDIA - Amar Mondal (42) of Bijpur's Chaubagha village hacked to death his younger brother, Swapan, following a quarrel over tree felling.

"The Mondal brothers began Thursday with yet another round of quarrel that was routine among them. The issue this time round was the younger Mondal's desire to fell the tree in front of their house. Amar tried to stop Swapan from doing so by snatching the axe from him. But Swapan insisted on felling the tree and an altercation ensued. Suddenly, Amar raised the axe and swung at his younger brother's neck a couple of times. Swapan died on the spot. Realising his blunder, Amar began running towards the road. Neighbours, who rushed in on hearing Swapan's screams, gave chase thinking Amar was trying to flee. But he was run over after he threw himself in front of a truck, driven by remorse.

"According to locals, Swapan wanted to cut the tree in front of their house. But Amar would not allow him as he was emotionally attached to it."
