Hungry Cat Leads Police To Double Murder/Suicide

"NEW CASTLE, PA — A 40-year-old woman, her 12-year-old son and the boy's elderly grandmother were found shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide just after 12:30 p.m. Friday.

"Police say all three died inside their South Mercer Street duplex from single gunshots to the head. Police estimate they'd been dead for at least two days.

"Reports say a neighbor called 911 after noticing the victims' cat milling around searching for food. That's when officers came to the home and discovered the bodies.

"`They were concerned that the cat doesn't usually go over and eat cat food from the neighbors, and they were concerned that they didn't see the family either,` said New Castle police Chief Thomas Sansone.

"Reports said the boy and grandmother were found in separate upstairs bedrooms, and the other woman was found at the foot of the stairs.

"Police recovered a 38-caliber revolver at the scene but said there's no sign of forced entry and no word on a possible motive."
