Suspected Killer Found Dead In Police Parking Lot

"HOPEWELL, VA — A man suspected of killing a 73-year-old woman in Pender County, N.C., apparently shot himself in the head late Wednesday night or early today in the parking lot of Hopewell City Hall.

"The body of Wilber Price Jr., 70, was discovered about 12:18 a.m. today by a city resident in the lot that is shared with the Hopewell Police Department. The resident told a Hopewell police officer leaving department headquarters that an unresponsive man was on the ground next to his vehicle, Hopewell police said.

"The officer saw a large amount of blood near the man’s head. Price was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.

"Hopewell police said they believe the man, later identified as Price, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. There were no apparent witnesses to the shooting and no one reported hearing a gun being fired, police said.

"Investigators believe the man’s vehicle had been parked in the lot for five minutes or less.

"Hopewell police Chief John F. Keohane said Price at one time maintained a residence in the 600 block of Cabin Creek Drive in Hopewell.

"Price was a suspect in the death of Myrle Knowles Carr, 73, whose body was found Wednesday night inside her burning home in the 4000 block of Little Kelly Road in Rocky Point, N.C., according to news accounts in North Carolina. Price was living with Carr and was considered her boyfriend, authorities said.

"Keohane said Hopewell police are assisting Pender County sheriff’s investigators with their homicide investigation."
