Uncle Opens Fire On Nephew, Friend Before Shooting Himself

"SELMA, AL — According to Selma Police, a 68-year-old man shot his nephew and his nephew's 28-year-old friend on Sunday afternoon. The shooter, Bernard Eudon Steward, then shot himself. Both Steward and his nephew, identified by family members as James `Britt` Steward, died from the gunshot wounds.

"The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. in the 2300 block of Landline Road, within the Selma Police jurisdiction.

"When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 28-year-old friend, not identified at this time, shot in the abdomen screaming for help in the rear of a residence. Officers were directed to a covered shed area where they found Steward and his nephew, fatally wounded from gun shot wounds.

"The 28-year-old friend received first-aid, was transported first to the Vaughan ER in Selma, then to a local hospital in Montgomery for emergency surgery where he is in stable condition.

"A preliminary investigation has determined that Steward came to the residence of his nephew, where the nephew and his friend were outside under a covered shed area, and opened fire on the nephew first and then his friend.

"The friend was able to flee after being shot. Mr. Stewart then went back under the covered shed and shot his nephew several more times before turning the weapon on himself.

"A 9mm handgun was found on the scene and a smaller caliber weapon. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing."
