Victim Escapes, Shooter Botches Suicide

"SEATAC, WA — Investigators now say a shooting in SeaTac Thursday evening may have stemmed from a bad break-up.

"A woman was shot on 24th Ave. S. and a brief manhunt was launched for the shooter until he was located in a nearby wooded area with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both survived.

"The 25-year-old victim told police her 26-year-old ex-boyfriend, Samson Berhe, had been following her and opened fire on her car, according to court documents.

"She jumped out and was shot trying to run away from him. As she was cowering in fear, prosecutors say Berhe attempted to reload and pointed the gun at her head, telling her he was going to kill her and that her daughter would have no mother.

"The victim sprang up and punched Berhe in the face and then ran across the street, dodging another bullet until someone let her into a nearby home, prosecutors said.

"Detectives say Berhe took off but crashed his SUV a short time later, and then stole the victim's car. He drove about 1/2 mile then got out and ran off into a wooded area near S. 128th Street and Military Road, police said.

"An intense manhunt ensued and when Berhe was located about 40 minutes later, he shot himself in the chest, police said.

"Berhe, who is still recovering at Harborview Medical Center, was charged Friday with attempted murder and felony harassment."
