Prolific Perp Shoots Himself After Police Chase

"GREENSBORO, NC — A man whom police believe killed two women and assaulted a female employee at a post office has died following a police chase.

"Menice Montell Smith, 41, died around noon Monday following a crash in the 3300 block of South Elm-Eugene Street. Chasing officers approached the vehicle and saw that Smith had shot himself, Greensboro police said. Smith was pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital.

"Police believe Smith was connected to the shooting death of Jamie Lynn Goode, 36, at 3573 Sydney Oaks Dr. in Browns Summit; the death of Michaela Dionne Brewington, 46, at 3815 Pineway Dr. in Greensboro; and the assault of Deborah Kay Huffine, 52, at the U.S. Post Office at 1585 Yanceyville St. in Greensboro.

"Smith knew all three victims, police said. Smith was a contract truck driver with the U.S. Postal Service, and Huffine and Brewington were Postal Service employees. It's not yet known how he knew Goode.

"Witnesses told police Huffine was assaulted with a crowbar just after 5 a.m. Monday. She had facial cuts, contusions and possible broken bones and was in stable condition as Moses Cone Hospital as of Monday afternoon, police said.

"Goode was found dead at her home just a few doors down from Smith's home on Sydney Oak Drive, police said. Miller said they received a report of an assault on a female around 2:35 a.m. Monday.

"Brewington was found dead at her home just after noon Monday. Officers went to the Pineway Drive home after determining the Mercedes car Miller used in the chase was registered to that address, police said.

"Police didn't find Smith while searching his home Monday morning. The chase began at 11:54 a.m. after Smith refused to stop for a Guilford County sheriff's deputy, police said. Greensboro police joined what they called a brief chase.

"The chase ended after law enforcement officials performed a PIT maneuver, causing Smith's car to crash into a tree in the South Elm-Eugene Street median, police said.

"Police are still trying to determine a motive."
