Schoolteacher, Ex-Boyfriend Found Dead In School Parking Lot

"PHARR, TX — A longtime schoolteacher at Dr. William Long Elementary took part in an open house at the campus Monday night before entering a parked vehicle with her ex-boyfriend in the school's parking lot and later being found dead in what police are investigating as a murder/suicide.

"That's the picture Pharr police painted Tuesday morning in a news release describing the last night in the lives of Elvita Balli, 56, of McAllen and Ricardo Humberto Soto, 53, of Edinburg.

"School personnel first called Pharr police at 7:27 p.m. Monday, according to the release. Police soon arrived at the school—at 3700 N. Raider Drive, near PSJA North High School—to find a man and woman unconscious inside a red, four-door Cadillac CTS that was later determined to belong to Balli. It was parked beside a silver Jeep believed to belong to Soto.

"It appears that Soto shot Balli before shooting himself, police say in the release.

"At the scene Monday night, a justice of the peace pronounced the two dead and ordered autopsies, and police recovered a handgun from inside the Cadillac, according to the release."
