Slasher Botches Murder/Suicide

"TAMPA, FL — A 24-year-old man who deputies say stabbed himself in the neck after cutting a former girlfriend's throat was charged with first degree murder while recovering in the hospital, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

"Late Saturday night, deputies charged Manuel Santiago with killing Taneka Humphrey, 27, earlier that morning. Santiago, 12521 Tinsley Circle, was in St. Joseph's Hospital with a self-inflicted stab wound to the neck when charged with murder and armed burglary, the sheriff's office said.

"Deputies say Santiago used a key he still had after breaking up with Humphrey to enter her apartment in the Bavarian Village Apartments at 14432 Reuter Strasse Circle about 6:45 a.m. Saturday and went to her bedroom where he cut her throat while she was in bed.

"A man sleeping in another bedroom woke up and saw Santiago standing next to the bed, knife in hand and bleeding from the neck, the sheriff's office said.

"The roommate held the bedroom door shut, trapping Santiago in the room until deputies arrived, the sheriff's office said.

"Santiago was in critical but stable condition when taken to the hospital, the sheriff's office said at the time.

"Investigators say they do not have a motive for the killing."
