Suicide Follows "Execution" Of University Cop

"BLACKSBURG, VA — Terrified Virginia Tech students survived another grim campus lockdown Thursday after a gunman calmly executed a university police officer during a routine traffic stop.

"The brutal, unexplained killing sent a shudder across the campus of 30,000 just four years after 33 people died during a bloody 2007 rampage.

"`Our hearts are broken again for the family of our police officer,` said Virginia Tech President Charles Steger.

"Although authorities would not confirm the killer committed suicide, the body of a `suspicious` man was found about a quarter-mile from the initial murder scene. He was dead of a gunshot, and a weapon was found nearby.

"Local media and the Associated Press, citing law enforcement sources, said the dead man was the cop-killer."
