Attempted Murder/Suicide At Walmart Center

"DINWIDDIE, VA — A 32-year-old Petersburg man fatally shot himself in the chest in front of the Wal-Mart Distribution Center yesterday after wounding his female supervisor and opening fire on deputies, authorities said.

"The man, a nine-year employee at the facility, left for his lunch break and returned with a handgun, according to Dinwiddie Sheriff D.T. `Duck` Adams. Adams said that the man, whose identity has not yet been released, walked straight to the shipping department in the rear of the center and shot the victim in her leg.

"The victim, a 40-year-old Petersburg resident who has worked at the center for 18 years, was not critically wounded.

"`Right now we have no motive,` Adams said during a press conference Wednesday.

"He declined to comment on the nature of the relationship between the shooter and the victim, citing an ongoing investigation. Adams did say that there were witnesses to both incidents. The center is monitored by closed-circuit television, which a Wal-Mart spokesman said usually covers the interior and exterior of the facility.

"The Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of the initial shooting at 12:09 p.m. Deputies arrived three minutes later to find the suspect standing at the employee entrance, holding a gun. The suspect shot twice at law enforcement officers, who had taken cover behind parked vehicles, before turning the gun on himself."
