One Dead, One Critical After Kwik Mart Shooting

"WARSAW, IN — One person is dead and another is in critical condition in a Fort Wayne hospital after early morning shootings in Kosciusko County.

"Kosciusko County sheriff's deputies responded to a 5:38 a.m. call about a shooting that had just occurred at the Katie's Kwik Mart gas and convenience store at 100 N. Main St., Leesburg. Witnesses told sheriff's officers and detectives that a woman ran from her vehicle into the store frantically asking for help from the store clerk. The woman ran behind the counter area as a man ran into the business, chasing her and brandishing a handgun.

"The man could not get behind the secure counter area and fired one round from the handgun over the counter, striking the woman in the shoulder and then fled the store, the sheriff's department said.

"Witnesses described the fleeing vehicle as a red pickup truck to police who were converging on the area. Shortly afterward, a Warsaw police officer located the vehicle at the north end of an empty parking lot on the Warsaw Ivy Tech campus, at U.S. 30 and Silveus Crossing.

"As officers approached the vehicle, they discovered the driver was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the department said in a written statement.

"The woman was flown from the scene to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition, the sheriff's department said."
