Bratislava Bloodbath

"BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA - A gunman in the Slovak capital of Bratislava, whose identity is still under investigation, killed six members of the same family then shot himself after being cornered by police.

"Police President Jaroslav Spisiak said it is still unclear what the motive of the gunman, aged 50, actually was.

"The shooting took place in the Devinska Nova Ves district of Bratislava, and was closed off by police causing roadblocks for hours after the incident.

"A shootout which followed after the six victims were murdered resulted in another 14 getting wounded, one of which was a policeman who got shot in the head.

"Spisiak said `He was alone. He fired at everything that moved during his escape bid, the policemen surrounded him...they made it impossible for him to escape.`

"He said the killer entered the victims' apartment armed with a submachine gun with eight magazines and two handguns. He shot four women and one man when he got inside. He killed the sixth relative in the doorway before getting cornered by police and shooting himself."

  1. I normally don't report international murder/suicide events unless they're somehow spectacular or unusual. This incident certainly ranks in those categories.
