Woman Shoots Herself As Police Investigate

"MARINA, CA — A woman was dead and a man gravely wounded in a double shooting Friday at a Marina motel.

"`It appears to be a murder-suicide,` Marina police Lt. Rick Janicki said in the parking lot of the Motel 6, 100 Reservation Road.

"He cautioned that the investigation had just begun and the suspicion of an attempted murder and suicide was based on preliminary findings.

"According to Janicki, events unfolded this way:

"Police went to the motel just before 6:15 p.m. after receiving multiple calls about gunfire. Officers found a man in lying in the parking lot who had been shot in the head. He was still alive and was taken away by ambulance.

"As they investigated, they heard a gunshot from a nearby room. Using a pass key, officers entered the room and found a dead woman. She too had been shot in the head.

"`Two children are in protective custody,` Janicki said. They were not injured.

"Police had not positively identified the victims as of 8:30 p.m. The relationship between the man and woman and between the adults and the children was not immediately known, Janicki said. The ages of the children was not known.

"Police used headlights from their patrol cars to illuminate the parking lot at the back of the motel where the male victim had been found. Blood was pooled on the asphalt.

"The two-story motel on Reservation Road is just off Highway 1. The clerk on duty declined to comment."

  1. There's at least one Motel 6 incident per year and so far this is it for 2011.
