Four Found Dead On North Carolina Highway

"DURHAM, NC — A man shot three women inside a car on a stretch of N.C. 54 in the Research Triangle Park late Friday, then turned the gun on himself, authorities say.

"`He shot them, then shot himself,` Durham County Sheriff Worth Hill told The News & Observer.

"The sheriff said deputies do not believe drugs were involved, and said that they have a working `theory` as to what led to the apparent murders and suicide. He would not elaborate.

"The sheriff would not provide any other details, and referred questions to lower-ranking deputies who have been handling the crime more closely.

"Those officials said in interviews more information is expected to be released later today.

"Sheriff's deputies found the four people all shot to death just past midnight early Saturday morning, after responding to a call of reported gunshots.

"The car was found off the side of N.C. 54 in the RTP in southern Durham County, near where the highway passes over the Durham Freeway. The crime scene was directly across from the entrance to an office building for Sigma Xi, a scientific research society. Nearby are offices for RTI.

"The three women and one man were all described as being in their 20s, and all are believed to live in Durham County.

"The three women were found in a green Honda Accord. The man was outside the car. All had died of gunshot wounds.

"Deputies were not releasing information pending notification of family members, and due to what happened."
