Mom And Son OK After Botched Murder/Suicide

"ELMHURST, IL — A 41-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with attempted murder today after she allegedly gave her 7-year-old son a potentially lethal combination of prescription and over-the-counter drugs last week, authorities said.

"Cheryl Luchetta, of 841 North York Street, gave her son a mixture of valium, diazepam and Tylenol PM on Wednesday evening and then attempted to take her own life, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said today.

"Elmhurst police responded to a 911 call made Thursday by Luchetta after she claimed she found her son unresponsive at their home, Berlin said. Responders found the child unresponsive but alive and transported him to a local hospital. Berlin said the child has since been released.

"Berlin said an Elmhurst police investigation indicated that after giving the child the mixture of drugs last Wednesday evening, Luchetta cut her own throat and passed out. When she awoke on Thursday morning, she called 911.

"The defendant is currently undergoing psychiatric observation at a local hospital and is expected to be appear in DuPage County bond court later this week."
