Elderly Couple Dead Of Gunshot Wounds
"WILKES-BARRE, PA — Luzerne County officials are investigating the deaths of an elderly couple in a murder-suicide.
"Maintenance workers from St. Luke's Villa, 80 East Northampton St., found the body of villa resident Mildred Welebob in a parking lot on the nursing home's grounds Friday night, and she was pronounced dead around 11 p.m., said acting Luzerne County Coroner William Lisman.
"Officials found later the body of her husband, Chester Welebob, in his car in Wilkes-Barre Township. He was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. Both died from a single gunshot wound.
"`The gentleman took his wife's life, went to a favorite spot, and took his life,` Lisman said. `It's a tough situation.` The coroner's office is not performing autopsies, and he considers his office's jurisdiction in the case finished.
"Assistant District Solicitor Jarrett Ferentino said the investigation is open, but his office has a good handle on what they believe happened.
"`It's a very, very unfortunate situation. It appears to be a murder/suicide of an otherwise loving couple,` he said."
