Shooter Planned Deadly Confrontation

"MODESTO, CA — Authorities confirmed the identity of the man responsible for the shooting deaths of a deputy and locksmith in Modesto and other details, including reports that the man wore a bulletproof vest and a gas mask before shooting himself with a shotgun, police said.

"The Stanislaus County Coroner's Office said Jim Richard Ferrario, 45, was the body that burned inside the complex at the 2100 block of Chrysler Drive, after an hours-long standoff in north Modesto.

"Ferrario is suspected of shooting and killing deputy Deputy Robert `Bob` Paris and Locksmith Glendon Engert before barricading himself inside his residence.

"The official cause of death is a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Modesto Police Department said.

"Based upon gathered evidence located inside the home, police said that indicators suggest Ferrario was planning a deadly confrontation with law enforcement when they served him an eviction notice last Thursday.

"The sheriff's department was in the process of formally evicting Ferrario. They had posted a notice of eviction five days before the shooting on Ferrario's front door, police said.

"The hours-long standoff reached another peak when a fire ignited inside the home. The Modesto Fire Department is still investigating the fire, but have ruled out the possibility of the fire being caused by an electrical malfunction or natural gas.

"Ferrario was later found inside a bathroom with a stock of weapons and ammunition, including 22 firearms, 17 of which were rifles and shotguns as well other high-power guns. There were more than 500 rounds of ammunition and a police scanner."
