Couple Had "No History Of Violence"

"Orange, TX - Orange Police, the Texas Rangers and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an apparent murder-suicide.

"Police on the scene say 71-year-old Maxie Joseph Mier shot his wife 64-year-old Joanne Mier with a handgun sometime around noon Tuesday.

"Authorities [said] both were found in the kitchen.

"Police say the couple's daughter received a phone call from one of the victims letting her know what was going to happen. The daughter subsequently went to the house and found the couple dead in the kitchen.

"Authorities say there was no history of violence in the household and they were never before called to the house.

"Relatives of the couple [said] Maxie worked at the Orange Paper mill until he retired years ago while Joanne worked at a nearby Kroger.

"Neighbors were shocked at the news, saying Maxie was considered the `neighborhood watchman` who looked after homes whose owners were on vacation or out of town."
