Two Stabbed In Florida Freak-Out

"Merritt Island, FL - An enraged Merritt Island man stabbed his parents and threatened to kill his grandmother before fatally shooting himself this morning, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office reported.

"Ezra H. Selman, 33, attacked family members with a knife shortly before 9:20 a.m. in the 5800 block of North Courtenay Parkway, Sgt. Linda Moros said.

"Deputies rushed to the scene within four minutes, Moros said, and confronted Selman in the driveway. He shot himself in the head with a handgun, and he was later pronounced dead at Cape Canaveral Hospital, she said.

"Selman’s parents, Rebecca, 63, and Jack, 62, were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center after the knife attack, where they were hospitalized in stable condition.

"Moros said Selman — who has a history of drug abuse — `went crazy` when his grandmother refused to give him money."

  1. I knew Ezra Selman as a young man, 16-18. Merritt Island is a hard place to raise children. We left approximately 9 years ago and I'm glad we did. Both of our oldest sons lost friends to drugs, murder, suicide, and prison. Ezra was one of these friends. The Seminoles used to say the heat and the humidity on the island make people angry. I agree. When I knew Ezra he was a sweet, soft spoken young man who loved his grandmother dearly. He changed greatly after he received a beating from some of the thuggish teenagers on the island. The loss and trauma this family has suffered is heartbreaking for everyone concerned, including Ezra.

  2. I knew Ezra from 1996-99 and while we never really got along we shared some friends and did hang out some. In 2001 Ezra lost his best friend and I know that had to effect who he was as a person. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family....

  3. Ezra and I rode the bus together in junior high. I was always very shy and he was one of few people to be exceptionally kind and I've remembered that through the years. He had a very gentle and quiet nature and I pray for peace in his family as he is now with God in Heaven.

  4. I am Ezra's sister. Thank you for your kind words about my brother. He was a gentle soul with a terrible addiction problem. He is no longer struggling and his family will slowly heal. Thank you for your positive thoughts and prayers.

  5. I am so sad reading this! Ezra was on my team when we worked for Excell Agent Services in Rockledge. He was one of my most favorite agents on my team and best employees! He was so kind, gentle and always smiled at me and laughed at my jokes. He was one of the best people I have met in my life.

  7. Ezra had the most beautiful copper colored eyes, this warmth of earth and clay and trees and rich life... and with his pale freckled face, he truly was and will be one of the most stunning, deep thinking and kind natured souls i'll have crossed paths with.. i don't know why i think of him as often as i do, but i imagine that when i do, he knows. i hope so because i have only compassion and love for his spirit. peace, young Ezra. Did you know how many lives you've touched? Simply by being you?
