"MEDFORD, OR — Medford police say a 79-year-old man who built an Oregon grocery chain is in the hospital and his 80-year-old wife is dead of knife wounds.

"Lt. Tim Doney says it is a case of homicide and an attempted suicide.

"Rogue Valley Manor employees on nightly rounds found Raymond Nidiffer and his wife, Mary June, in their locked apartment Sunday.

"The police say emergency crews found her dead of knife wounds and him suffering from a knife wound that apparently was self-inflicted. He was reported in fair condition.

"He built C&K Market Inc. of Brookings into a regional chain of stores including his namesake Ray's Food Place, Price Less Food, Shop Smart and Pharmacy Express. The company remains in family hands."
