"We Don't Know Why"

"MOUNT HEALTHY, OH - Police are investigating a murder-suicide in which a man killed his wife Monday night, then turned the gun on himself, Mount Healthy Police Chief Al Schaefer said.

"The deadly scene at 7847 Clovernook Ave., began unfolding at 7:40 p.m. That's when Jackson Gray, 36, called his mom and told her he had just shot his wife and was going to shoot himself, Schaefer said.

"Police did not release the woman's name pending notification of her family.

"Gray's family, not knowing the exact house number, rushed there, then called for help, Schaefer said. Officers arrived and found the front door open.

"`We didn't know if this was a hostage situation or if somebody had barricaded themselves inside,` Schaefer said.

"The Hamilton County Police Association Special Weapons and Tactics Team responded, set up a perimeter and tried to make contact. Failing to get a response, they entered the house and found Gray and his wife each shot, in separate rooms.

"`We don't know why,` Schaefer said.

"Late Monday Mount Healthy Detective Greg Nolte and a state investigator remained on the scene.

"Schaefer said his department has been to the house once before for a domestic violence call.

"Court records show Gray was arrested on a charge of domestic violence on March 19 at that address.

"In that incident he was accused of pushing a woman down on a bed, choking her and threatening to kill her. Because the victim's name has not been released in Monday's shooting, it is unclear if the domestic violence case involved the same woman.

"Court records show charges were dismissed on May 7. A hearing to erase the charge from Gray's record was set for Friday."
