Ambush Awaited Troopers

"OIL CITY, PA - The Venango County man accused of fatally shooting a Pennsylvania State Police trooper Wednesday morning was lying in wait for police to arrive and was prepared to shoot anyone who came to the house, the state police commander said this afternoon.

"`This was premeditated, an ambush, and troopers didn't have a chance,` Col. Frank Pawlowski said in explaining the alleged motive of Michael J. Smith.

"Police said Smith, 44, fatally shot Trooper Paul G. Richey as Richey and another trooper went to investigate a reported domestic incident at Smith's Cranberry Township home late Wednesday morning.

"Other officers entered the house hours later and found Smith and his wife, Nancy Smith, 53, dead in a bedroom. Both died of gunshot wounds, police say."
