Death At The 7-Eleven

"SANTA CRUZ, CA - Santa Cruz Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide at the 7-Eleven on Ocean Street and Broadway.

"At 9:30 a.m. today, police responded to the 7-Eleven after customers told officers the store was open but had no clerk. After forcing entry with the assistance of Santa Cruz Fire, police found two bodies in the store's bathroom, according to Capt. Steve Clark.

"The store clerk, a 24-year-old female, was found dead with an undetermined amount of gunshot wounds, he said. Lying next to the clerk was a 42-year-old male from San Jose, also dead with gunshot wounds, Clark said.

"`All indications point to a murder-suicide,` he said. `We believe they were in a relationship.`

"The extent of the relationship is unclear, police said.

"Investigators found a gun next to the male and believe the male fired upon the female before taking his own life, said Zach Friend, police spokesman.

"The 7-Eleven was blocked off with crime scene tape while detectives review store surveillance tapes. Officers said there were no reports of gunshots heard at the time of the incident.

"`This is a tragic way to start the new year,` Clark said. `Hopefully this is not indicative of the year to come.`

"The state Department of Justice is aiding in the processing of the scene."
