Boxer Hangs Himself After Killing Wife

"CARACAS, VENEZUELA - Boxing world champion Edwin Valero has committed suicide in a Colombian jail where he was on suspicion of killing his wife on the weekend, local media said on Monday.

"Venezuelan media quoted police officials as saying that the 28-year-old hung himself with parts of his own clothing in his cell in the Venezuelan town of Valencia some time during the night from Sunday to Monday.

"He had been arrested earlier Sunday after allegedly admitting to hotel staff in Valenica that he had stabbed his wife to death.

"Valero became WBA super featherweight champion in 2006 before vacating the title in 2008 when he moved up to the lightweight division, winning the WBC title in 2009.
The southpaw broke the world record when he won his first 18 fights with a first-round knockout and went on to win all of his 27 professional fights on a knockout.

"He vacated his lightweight title earlier this year to move to the junior welterweight division in the hope of getting a shot at Manny Pacquiao.

"The Filipino boxer is the first in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions."
