Kids Heard Gunshots And Mom Screaming

"CARMEL, IN — The Carmel Police Department is investigating a shooting after a woman and her ex-husband were found dead with gunshot wounds in a Carmel townhouse.

"Police arrived to the home at the Traditions on the Monon, located in the 900 block of 3rd Avenue NW, around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday. Police said Suzanne Saunders, 50, and her ex-husband, 46-year-old Aaron Saunders, were having a dispute before gunshots were fired.

"The Carmel Police Department said Suzanne’s three children, ages 16, 12 and 11, were at the home getting ready for school when their stepfather came to the house. Police said the children heard their mother and stepfather arguing. The children told police they then heard gunshots and their mother screaming.

"Police said Suzanne’s sons ran out of the house, while her 11-year-old daughter hid in an upstairs bedroom. Police said the 16-year-old son called police on his cell phone to report the shooting.

"`The male subject entered the house earlier this morning. There was an argument,` said Jeff Horner with the Carmel Police Department. `The children heard shots fired, and they left. And the older child did call police at that time.`

"The children are in protective custody.

"Carmel police said preliminary evidence indicates the shooting was a murder-suicide. However, they said they are handling the shooting as an active homicide investigation while evidence continues to be collected and the autopsies are completed."
