"Very Nice" Elderly Couple Found Dead

"QUAKERTOWN, PA — Police are investigating a murder-suicide in Quakertown.

"Charles C. Christine, 88, shot his wife, Betty Jane Christine, 86, in the back of the head while she slept in their bed early Monday morning, said Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler.

"Charles Christine then went into another room and turned the gun on himself.

"The couple's daughter arrived to routinely check on her parents at 8:50 a.m. Monday, and came upon the scene.

"Both husband and wife were pronounced dead at the scene.

"The couple lived in Apartment 202 in the J building at Quakertown West apartments on the 400 block of South Ninth Street.

"Police could not discuss what might have led to the incident.

"But neighbors said Monday that Betty Jane had suffered from health problems.

"She had nerve problems in her back, and took a lot of prescription pain medicine, said Justin Elwell, maintenance worker for the apartment complex.

"Neighbors were shocked by the violent incident, and described the elderly couple as nice and sociable.

"`They were a very nice couple,` said Kaushik Patel, who lives in an apartment next door to the Christines."
