Neighbors' Concern Leads To Gruesome Discovery

"OAKLAND, CA — An elderly couple was found shot to death Thursday afternoon in their Laurel District home and police are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide.

"The names of the couple, an 81-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman, were not released pending notification of relatives.

"Police believe the man killed his wife then himself, but that will have to be confirmed by an autopsy.

"The couple apparently was despondent over having lost a son to cancer a year ago, police said.

"Officer Rob Rosin said the couple was discovered about 2:30 p.m. Thursday inside their home in the 3900 block of Loma Vista Avenue after neighbors became concerned when they had not seen them for a few days.

"The couple had lived in the house some 40 years, a neighbor told police."
