"THORNTON, CO — Thornton police say that a father shot and killed his 4-year-old son before shooting himself early Tuesday.
"Investigators from the Thornton Police Department, Colorado Bureau of Investigation and Adams County Coroner's Office have concluded that Kevin Ray Bristol, 30, used a .22-caliber rifle to murder his son, Michael, and then used the rifle to kill himself, police spokesman Matt Barnes said Thursday morning.
"Michael Bristol died from a single gunshot wound to the head at a hospital Tuesday, police said. Kevin Bristol died from a self-inflicted single gunshot wound to the head at a hospital Wednesday.
"Officers arriving at the family's home at 9270 High Street just after midnight Tuesday found the toddler and his father in a back bedroom.
"A friend [said] Kevin Bristol revealed Friday that he and his wife, Carmen Bristol, were breaking up. The father told the friend that he was working to get custody of his son.
"Police said the wife discovered the shooting and called 911."
