3 Shots, 2 Dead, No Motive

"Nacogdoches, TX - Nacogdoches police are investigating two shooting deaths in the Village Gate subdivision, and officers suspect a murder-suicide.

"Carlton Edwards and his wife, Donnie, were found in their home in the 900 block of Village Gate Circle by their teenage daughter. Nacogdoches police arrived just before 2 a.m., and NPD Lt. Tim Goerner said a handgun was found near the husband.

"Police believe Carlton fired two shots at his wife before shooting himself, but authorities still do not know the motive.

"Art Wheeless, the Edwards' neighbor, called police after the girl came to his house.

"`The oldest child came to the door, ringing the doorbell,` Wheeless said. `I came to the house and ... I went inside with the child. I saw the father was lying there. I took the kids back out of the house.`

"Police collected evidence while the Edwards' two children waited at the Wheeless home with a child protective services worker. Their paternal grandparents came from Tyler to take custody.

"Donnie Edwards worked for Aramark Food Service at SFA. Police did not find employment records for Carlton, Goerner said.

"Neighbors said the Edwards moved into the home last March. The Edwards were leasing the home, which had been recently renovated and placed for sale by owners. Wheeless said he thought the family was building a home somewhere in Nacogdoches and would only be in the Village Gate Circle home a few more months."
