Intruder Commits Suicide After Attempted Murder & Assault

"SANTA CRUZ, CA — Police are investigating a burglary and attempted murder in Santa Cruz on Sunday that ended with the suspect taking his own life.

"Richard Andrew Glanzman, a 55-year-old Santa Cruz man, was suspected of breaking into a home in the 100 block of Mountain View Avenue, where a 32-year-old woman was taking a nap alone at her friend's house, according to police.

"Woken up by sounds of the intruder, the woman confronted the man. He began to attack her, attempting to both sexually assault and strangle her, police said.

"The woman struggled with him and was able to break free and escape, police said.

"After arriving at the scene, police learned that Glanzman, who lived in the neighborhood, matched the woman's description of the intruder.

"Officers arrived at his home to find a gun case, live ammunition spilled on the floor, and Glanzman barricaded inside his bedroom, police said.

"While trying to contact Glanzman with the help of a hostage negotiation team and a tactical team, police evacuated about 20 homes in the neighborhood and secured a perimeter around Glanzman's house, police said.

"Police also obtained an arrest warrant for Glanzman for attempted sexual assault, attempted homicide, burglary, and false imprisonment, with a bail amount of $1 million.

"When the tactical team finally entered the home, they found Glanzman dead in an upstairs bedroom where he had shot himself, according to police.

"Police said the victim was treated for her injuries and is recovering. "
