Recently Separated Couple Shot Dead

"WEST POINT, GA — Two people are dead in an apparent murder-suicide in West Point that occurred early Saturday morning, according to a Troup County Sheriff’s report. At approximately 12:30 a.m., deputies responded to 207 Jim Turner Road in reference to a report that two people had been shot.

"The Troup County Coroner pronounced a female victim, identified as 52-year-old Linda Sykes of LaGrange, dead at the scene. Richard Sykes Sr., 61, of Montgomery, Ala., was on a couch beside her and also suffered from gunshot wounds. He was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday, according to the report.

"The pair were reported to be a husband and wife, recently separated and reportedly had marital problems. Through an investigation, deputies learned that Sykes bought a bicycle Friday. Later that night, he parked his Nissan Sentra at a secluded location on a road near the home and rode his bicycle to the home, where the shooting took place, the report said.

"An adult, who lives at the home, heard gunshots and called police."
