Shooting Rampage Ends With Gunman's Suicide
"PENDLETON, IN — A man was shot dead in a hail of bullets fired by a crazed gunman engaged in a deadly stand-off with police.
"He got caught up in Thursday night's gunfire as he sat in his car in the Indianapolis town of Pendleton.
"The unnamed victim was fatally shot by Jim Kenneth Bailey when the killer opened fire on two policemen responding to reports of shots being fired.
"After a seven-hour manhunt Bailey then turned the gun on himself.
"One of the officers, Marty Dulworth, was fighting for his life following the violent attack.
"He was air-lifted to hospital where he remains in a critical condition, undergoing surgery, having been shot in both legs.
"A second officer suffered a graze wound to his neck and was treated at hospital then released. He later returned to the scene.
"Adding to the tragedy Dulworth's dog, Kilo, was also caught up in the gunfire and was killed, indystar.com reported.
"The two officers were responding to reports of gunshots being heard in Pendleton at around 10.30pm when 59-year-old Bailey opened fire.
"Homeowner Angela Reynolds [said] she made the call after hearing the shots coming from her garage on the 300 block of East Water Street.
"She described the gunfire as `rapid`, adding that she `scrambled` to the house in terror before dialing 911.
"`The cops pulled up and we told them (the suspect) was probably in the garage because we heard something,` she said.
"`Then the next thing we know, there's gunfire going back and forth.`
"The town was sealed off while police hunted Bailey, using helicopters, supported by SWAT teams.
"Residents were told to not leave their homes.
"Police said they believe Bailey's attack may have been sparked by a fight with his ex-girlfriend or ex-wife.
"He was found in the early hours of Friday morning, having fatally shot himself. Among his alarming hoard of weapons were a pistol, an AK-47, flak jacket, and gas mask."
