"The Lord Was Looking Out For Her"

"JONESVILLE, SC — Union County sheriff’s investigators believe a shooting near Jonesville early Monday was an attempted murder and suicide.

"Barry Keith Thompson, 47, and Jackie Lynn Thompson, 43, of 125 Hoyt Drive, both suffered gunshot wounds to the head, said Union County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Perry Haney.

"One of the couple’s children called 911 just before 7 a.m. Monday and reported the shooting. Deputies recovered a .25-caliber pistol at the home, Haney said.

"Barry Thompson died of his injuries after he was taken to Wallace Thompson Hospital, Deputy Coroner John Fallaw said.

"Jackie Thompson was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she is recovering.

"Investigators think Barry Thompson shot his wife, then shot and killed himself, Haney said Wednesday. The chief deputy didn’t elaborate, but said the couple was having problems. However, there was no evidence of an argument before the shooting, he said.

"Evidence is still being analyzed by the State Law Enforcement Division.

"`We don’t anticipate any arrests,` Haney said. `(Jackie Thompson) is very lucky; the Lord was looking out for her.`"
