"Terrible Smell" Leads To Disturbing Discovery

"SPRINGFIELD, MO — Springfield police are investigating a possible murder-suicide at 1407 West Mt. Vernon Street, police spokesman Matt Brown said this morning.

"Brown said police found a man and a woman dead in a second-story bedroom.

"Neighbors said they called police at 1:30 a.m. after smelling a `terrible smell` coming from a duplex in the neighborhood.

"`I said, 'I know we need to call the cops because I know something is wrong,'` said neighbor Angela Faiers.

"Several neighbors said the duplex was occupied by a husband and wife. The woman was last seen on Friday, several neighbors said this morning.

"Brown said police went to the residence Sunday afternoon as well but saw nothing suspicious.

"At 1:46 a.m., police returned to the duplex apartment when neighbors complained of a smell that made some sick.

"Reporting officers also noticed the smell, then called a supervisor who authorized entry into the back door.

"Police would not comment on injuries or evidence."
