"MOLINE, IL - Tonight Moline police say they are not searching for suspects after two elderly residents were found shot to death inside their home this morning.
"It's a neighborhood filled with manicured lawns and mature trees, a picturesque Q.C. street on Moline's western border. It's not the kind of place you'd expect to see police first thing on a Wednesday morning.
"Neighbors gathered on their front porches wondering what had happened in the keenly kept home on 2nd Street. One neighbor stopped by after not hearing from the elderly owners for a few days. The last time anyone saw them was during their garage sale this weekend. Boxes stacked on tables in the garage greeted police as they broke in to investigate.
"`They shook the window in front and got the screen open`, explained neighbor Lewis Viviani, `and one of the police went inside. They found them in the basement.`
"Neighbors told us the bodies were of 85 year old Alice Poling and, her husband, 78 year old Virgil. He was known to the American Legion Honor Guard as `Gene`. Post 246 members say the couple was active with the hall. Gene served in Korea. Neither they nor neighbors heard either mention being ill but described their personalities as strong. No one could imagine what police told them they found, Alice shot and Gene holding a gun.
"Viviani said, `It's unbelievable because he (Gene) didn't seem like the type of person to get that angry.`
"`We're not sure what happened, but it's a loss`, neighbor Marcia Wetzel told us. `It's a loss for everybody. It's a loss for the family, the neighbors.`"
