Woman Saved By Defective Bullet

"HAMPTON TWP, Pa. - Allegheny County police are investigating an apparent domestic incident that left one woman injured and a man dead from a gunshot in Hampton Township.

"According to county 911, township police responded to a call about a woman injured in the 4600 block of Sylvan Drive on Tuesday morning.

"Channel 4 Action News' Janelle Hall reported that county police said Joanne Goodrich's live-in boyfriend tried to shoot her, but the round was defective and wounded Goodrich in the face.

"Hall reported that the argument started because Goodrich was upset that John Kohan, 53, was behind on the rent.

"After Goodrich, 57, was wounded, neighbors told Hall she ran out of the house screaming for help.

"`She was trying to get him to move out and I guess things came to blows at quarter to 5 this morning,` said Nancy Kadyk, who lives nearby.

"Police said that Kohan died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after Goodrich left the house.

"Neighbors said Goodrich, who owns The Gazebo Gift Shop, wanted to renovate more apartments around her business and sell the home she once shared with her late husband.

"William Goodrich was a Hampton Township firefighter who died in 2002 from a heart attack he suffered while battling a blaze on the street where he lived.

"`I'm still shocked to see that black body bag go out. And just, I'm sorry to see any domestic situation end up like that. It's just scary and sad,` Kadyk said.

"Goodrich was taken to the hospital and was undergoing surgery on Tuesday for her wounds."
