One Dead In Botched Murder/Suicide
"SPRINGFIELD, MO - Springfield police have confirmed that the suspect in a standoff Monday night was found dead of an apparent suicide.
"Wayne Jackson Sr., 39, died of an apparent gunshot wound, but a definitive cause of death will be made by a medical examiner, Lt. Scott Levin said.
"Jackson was reported to be in a vacant office building at 705 W. Battlefield Road Monday night after allegedly shooting a woman in the ear.
"That woman fled the scene and then called police. The woman was treated at a Springfield hospital for non life-threatening injuries, Moore said. He said he believed the couple was estranged.
"The standoff ended late Monday night. The incident began around 5:30 p.m. when the woman called police while she was driving from the scene.
"A SWAT team arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. He said police believed the man was armed with a handgun.
"`The individual may or may not be inside,` Moore said during the first media briefing that night. `We are trying to establish contact with him.`
"Police later found the man inside more than two hours later."
