"Horrible Outcome" To Tumultuous Relationship

"EIGHT MILE, AL — An Eight Mile man and a woman were found shot to death inside his Eight Mile home this morning in what appears to be a murder-suicide, according to Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

"Lori Myles, a spokeswoman with the Sheriff’s Office, said the man was shot once and the woman was shot twice. She said deputies are not ready to definitively classify it as a murder-suicide until after they complete their investigation.

"Officials identified the victims as John Woodrow Uptagraft and Patricia Evans.

"Baldwin County court records show that Uptagraft had pending rape and kidnapping charges, with Evans as the alleged victim. Myles said investigators believe she was his girlfriend.

"According to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, prosecutors were planning to present the case to a grand jury next week.

"In granting Uptagraft bail following his arrest, Baldwin County District Judge Jody Bishop ordered the defendant not to have any contact with Evans or her family. But Myles said the woman apparently went voluntarily to the Uptagraft’s home at 8445 Rosemary Road, where he also rain a repair shop called John Transmission.

"Sam Jovings, a lawyer who represented Uptagraft at a preliminary hearing in August said he was surprised to hear that his former client and Evans had died violently.

"`What a horrible outcome,` he said. `I hate to hear that.`"

  1. My great great great great grandmother committed suicide by slitting her throat aged 66 in January 1856 on a farm in Yorkshire UK. Another distant cousin shot his wife and then himself with a shotgun in Lancashire, UK in 1959, after a turbulent domestic relationship similar to the one described here. Murder and suicide have a particular resonance in my family and I am interested in the stories in your blog to help understand the tragic events in my own family history. Thankyou for sharing.
