Deputy Finds Bodies Of Elderly Couple
"SMITHFIELD, OH — The Jefferson County sheriff said an elderly couple is dead after an apparent murder-suicide.
"The man and woman, who were both in their 80s, died from gunshot wounds at their home on County Road 15 in Smithfield.
"Sheriff Fred Abdalla said the couple was well-known in their neighborhood. Neighbors called police around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, and reported that neither the man or woman had come in our out of their home since Sunday night. A deputy who responded to check on the couple found their bodies.
"`Whenever you go into a home like this, you always look for the worst: Are they both deceased? Did they die a natural death? Carbon monoxide poisoning? We don't know. But when he walked in here, he found a homicide-suicide situation,` Abdalla said."
