Retired Couple Found Dead After Welfare Check

"LA JOLLA, CA — The bodies of a retirement-age couple who may have died in a murder-suicide were found in a La Jolla home Wednesday.

"Patrol officers checking on the residents' welfare at the request of a concerned relative found the 81-year-old man and 77-year-old woman dead in their Caminito Sueno house about 12:30 p.m., according to San Diego police. The couple's names were withheld pending family notification.

"Due to suspicious circumstances at the scene, homicide detectives were called in, said San Diego Police Department Lt. Ernie Herbert, who declined to disclose the nature of that evidence.

"`The home was found secure, and investigators do not believe there are any outstanding suspects,` Herbert said.

"It was not immediately clear how the couple died, according to Herbert. Cause-of-death rulings were on hold pending autopsies."
